Electrocardiogram changes due to sodium stibogluconate treatment of kala-azar

Background: Kala-azar [visceral leishmaniasis (VL)] is caused by the protozoon Leishmania donovani complex. Without adequate treatment, most patients with clinical VL die due to secondary infections. Pentavalent antimonial compounds are commercially available as sodium stibogluconate and meglumine antimoniate. Sodium remains mainstay of treatment in parts world. The aim study was evaluate serious adverse effects kala-azar (VL). Methods: carried out medicine department North Bengal Medical College Hospital, Sirajganj during period June 2021 December 2021. It a descriptive cross-sectional sample size 30. Complete history taking physical examination were done recorded case record form. At least 7 electrocardiograms (ECGs) (1 before 5 weekly intervals, 1 after completion treatment). Results: In ECG, following changes noted (the rhythm, T wave amplitude, ST segment, QTc interval). Out 30 patients, 19 (63.33%) developed abnormalities ECG. Among them, 14 (46.67%) prolongation interval, 6 inversion, patient transient 1st-degree heart block. No symptomatic arrhythmia. Conclusions: prevalent among poor Bangladesh can be fatal without treatment. has been associated cardiological effects, but it used safely proper monitoring.
